We assessed the Companies Registration Office (CRO) website for accessibility and usability in 2006. We also performed user testing of the annual returns system with accountants and solicitors, the 'presenters' that comprise much of the CRO's customer base.
The goal of the accessibility audit and usability testing was twofold. Firstly, the audit is used to ascertain the level of accessibility compliance. Secondly the expert evaluation and user testing were intended to help make the CRO website achieve high levels of user satisfaction.
The expert evaluation was focused on assessing the usability of key systems of the public website, www.cro.ie, including the important functionality including the Company Search tool, Auditor Search tool, online forms and Business Registraiotn process.
Simultaneously, an accessibility audit was carried out on the site to WAI Level AA compliance.
Finally, prior to the release of a new piece of functionality (the online Annual Returns system) the system was tested internally with representative users from the legal and accounting profession. Individuals were recorded on video and audio and observed by 2 test facilitators while completing a series of exercises.
The outputs of the assessments and user testing was a report with recommendations for the CRO. The report was complimented by audio-video of each test, allowing the CRO to easily identify and address usability and accessibility issues.
