The ESB (Electricity Supply Board) engage Open Interface to periodically verify the compliance of the ESB Corporate and ESB Networks websites to WAI WCAG 1.0 Level A. The site, managed by the ESB’s own web development team, was previously managed by Ennis Information Age Services.
Many pages on the website are frequently updated. In the ESB accessibility statement, the ESB state that their website is WAI Level A compliant. However, the challenge with compliance is that WAI WCAG compliance statements should be made for each discreet HTML “document” on the website. Open Interface were invited to propose a systematic and thorough evaluation methodology for the ESB website that would allow a high level of confidence with the claim of Level A compliance.
We devised a rigorous, repeatable accessibility test methodology for the ESB, using a combination of automated accessibility validation tools as well as systematic instructions on how to carry out ‘subjective’ user checks. This allows for a large sample of pages to be tested thoroughly in a short period of time.
We provided the ESB development team with a detailed assessment of the site, with recommendations to address issues of non-compliance. This allowed the ESB to state, with confidence, the true level of compliance of their website
