Meath County Council Intranet: Case Study

Meath.ie logo

Background

Like most organisation intranets, Meath County Councils had developed in a hap-hazard fashion over the years. Open Interface were called in to re-focus the intranet and better serve staff. As a pretext, you might like to check out Jakob Nielsen's Alertbox from November 11, 2002: Intranet Usability: The Trillion-Dollar Question.

Goals

The goal was to create a more intuitive and easy to use intranet for Meath County Council staff.

Our Solution

Meath County Council engaged Open Interface to carry out a series of questionnaire surveys, workshops and focus groups with Meath County Council staff.

Open Interface designed a questionnaire survey to explore what systems on the intranet were most used and gather feedback from users on usage patterns. There were over 150 respondents to the online questionnaire. Approximately 30 of these respondents were selected to participate in two focus groups.

The results we analysed and drafted into a report for Meath County Council. A number exercises were carried out with key stakeholders to formulate an approach to revising information architecture. This exercise resulted in a much more efficient and stream-lined intranet with fast access to key features and a highly intuitive information architecture.

Deliverables included wire frame prototypes and a new site schematic for Meath County Council developers to implement.

Customer Comment

Open Interface's involvement was invaluable in the re-development of our Intranet. Through extensive user requirement gathering, workshops and analysis of the content they were able to overhaul the current structure and navigation. The new site design, layout and information structure is much more intuitive, concise and helpful to Meath County Council staff.
