Creative Web Designer

We are looking for a creative, enthusiastic web designer to join our dynamic and growing company.

You will work as part of a team that will include analysts, developers, a project manager and other web designers. Projects vary in size and duration, from short projects that take a few weeks to very large projects that take several months.

You should have at least 1-3 years practical experience. If you have more experience, so much the better. Salary is based on experience.

It’s important you have a strong web design portfolio. If your portfolio is predominantly print (e.g. CD covers, letterheads, brochures, advertising) it is unlikely you will be called to interview.

Skills

You will have proven ability in the following:

  • Outstanding creative skill and web-savvy
    You should have a deep appreciation of current web design trends and be able to create original designs that meet specific design briefs. Your portfolio should reflect your ability to merge creative design and great usability. You should know instinctively what works and what doesn’t.
  • Photoshop Expert
    You will need to be an expert in using Adobe Photoshop. If you can also use other design software so much the better.
  • HTML & CSS
    You must be implement your designs as CSS-based web pages (ideally using Adobe Dreamweaver).  You must have experience of building sites for cross browser compatibility. 
  • Appreciation of the Design Process
    You may be required to become involved in wire-framing design prototypes. Experience of best practice for web page layout is a strong plus.

Other useful experience, for bonus points:

  • Can code standards compliant CSS and XHTML
  • Understanding and practical experience of web accessibility (WAI guidelines) and how they relate to web design
  • Prototyping experience, we use Axure RP but a pen and paper can work as well.
  • User Centred Design. Consideration and understanding of the various aspects of the User Centred Design process.
  • Additional design skills including the likes of Flash, Animation and Print (DTP).

In addition, you should have the following characteristics:

  • Good Communicator. You may have to inspire non-designers. You must be comfortable talking to clients about aspects of web design and justify your own work to a client.
  • Attention to detail. Design requires care, you must have an eye for detail.
  • Time-management. You’ll need strong time management and organisational skills with the ability to meet deadlines with high quality work.
